A liner is the channel inside the chimney that carries smoke and gases out and keeps heat away from the surrounding structure. Many masonry chimneys have clay tile liners stacked in sections. Tiles can crack, joints can open, and pieces can break off and fall into the smoke chamber or the firebox. A factory-built fireplace uses its own metal flue from the same manufacturer, which is repaired with parts from that system.
Relining comes up in a few situations. A damaged clay liner is one. Adding a wood or gas insert is another, because an insert usually needs a liner sized and approved for that appliance. Changing fuel, for example from wood to gas, is a third. The liner has to be matched to the appliance and the fuel, not only to the size of the chimney.
We explain what we found, whether the existing liner can be repaired and what a new liner would involve, including the work at the top of the chimney to seal and cap it. If a finding means the fireplace should not be used until it is fixed, we say so plainly. Keep any fragments you find. Relining is usually done from the roof, with the liner lowered down the existing flue.
