How a single-flue cap is fastened
Most single-flue caps drop over the tile and clamp to it with corner bolts. Installation guidance from HY-C, which makes caps, says those bolts must not penetrate the tile, and some of its caps put a metal ridge between each bolt and the tile to protect it. A tile that is already cracked cannot hold that clamp for long.
Our team tightens each bolt evenly, checks that the cap sits level and pulls on it by hand before leaving the roof. If the tile is chipped at the top, we show you and price the repair before fitting anything to it.
Caps on flues that vent other appliances
Chimneys often carry more than a fireplace flue. A furnace, water heater or other fuel-burning appliance may vent through its own tile, and that flue needs a cap that suits the appliance. The appliance maker's installation instructions set what may be fitted at the top.
We identify which flue serves which appliance before choosing caps. A screen suited to a wood-burning fireplace is not automatically right for another appliance's flue, and we price the cap for each flue on its own line.
Rattling or whistling from the cap on windy days
A cap that rattles in the wind is telling you something has loosened. The lid bracket may have bent, a bolt may have backed out or the cap may be shifting on the tile. A high whistle can come from damaged mesh or a lid that has dropped out of line.
Noise is worth checking before a storm finishes the job. We find the loose part, tighten or replace it and show you what moved, so you know whether the cap has more life in it or needs replacing.
Protecting the roof while we work
A cap replacement happens on the roof, and the roof has to be in the same shape when we leave. Shingle, tile and metal roofs each need their own care, from where the ladder stands to where tools and the old cap are set down.
We carry the old cap down, clear drill dust and adhesive from the crown and look over the roof around the chimney before leaving. If we see damaged roofing near the chimney, we point it out so you can decide whether to have it looked at.
