Decorative tops that are listed
A decorative shroud can dress up the top of a factory-built chimney. Florida's building code permits one only if it is listed for the particular chimney system it sits on.
We fit only the terminations and shrouds the chimney maker lists for the system. If you like a look that is not listed, we show you the listed options that come closest. We show you the listed tops for your system side by side, so the choice is about appearance and nothing else. The top we fit is recorded with the rest of the chimney parts.
The roof opening for the chimney
The chimney has to pass through the roof somewhere, and one chimney maker advises against modifying roof beams to make room for it. The route is chosen to fall between structural members where possible.
We lay out the roof opening from inside the attic before cutting and coordinate the roofing work with your roofer or ours. The roof side of the job is listed in the estimate with who does it and in what order. The roof opening is covered at the end of each work day until the chimney and its roof parts are in place.
Setting the fireplace level and square
A fireplace that is out of level shows it in the doors, the trim and the face. One maker asks for the unit to be leveled and shimmed with noncombustible material and checked for equal diagonals so the doors fit.
Our installers set the unit to the manual and check the doors before the chimney is connected. That extra care means the finished face sits true and the doors close evenly. A level unit also keeps the surround panels and the hearth strips in line with the finished floor, so the fireplace looks built in.
Ahead of the first fire
A new fireplace should be used only after its installation is complete and its instructions are read. One maker asks for the damper to be open whenever the fireplace is in use and for the fireplace to be inspected and cleaned before use.
We walk through the first fire with you, including the damper, the screen and any doors. You keep the manual and the written record of the work together, and our workmanship warranty covers the installation. If the maker lists a break-in procedure for the first fires, we go through it with you step by step.
