Every wood fire leaves something behind in the flue, and how much depends on the wood, the fire and the chimney. Creosote forms when smoke cools on its way up the flue and condenses on the walls. In its early form it is soft and sooty and comes off with brushing. With cool, smoky fires it can build into a crusty layer, and some chimneys develop a hard, shiny glaze that a brush will not remove.
All of it is combustible, which is why buildup in the flue is taken seriously. A standard sweep removes the soft and flaky deposits. Glazed deposits need a different treatment, usually a product applied to the flue that changes the glaze so it can be removed afterward, followed by another cleaning. That takes more than one visit, and we explain the process and the price before recommending it.
How you burn affects what builds up. Dry, seasoned wood and a fire with enough air produce less smoke and less residue than wet wood or a fire left to smolder overnight. Please do not try to scrape glaze yourself or use chemical treatments without the manufacturer's instructions. Cleaning is done from inside, from the top or both, depending on the chimney.
