Venting work for Whites Landing gas fireplaces
What the Florida fuel gas code expects
Most vent questions go back to the instructions under the Florida Building Code, Fuel Gas. Section 503.2.3 says listed direct-vent appliances shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, section 503.6.2 says the same of gas vents, and section 502.1 requires vents to be listed and labeled.
In practice the appliance manual and the vent maker's instructions are the working rulebook for your Whites Landing fireplace. Our team reads both for the unit in front of us and never carries dimensions from one model to another.
Where the termination may sit
A wall termination has to keep its distance from openings and surfaces. Table 503.8 of the Florida fuel gas code sets direct-vent terminal clearances, including 12 inches above grade and a distance from openable windows and doors that grows with the appliance's input. DuraVent's instructions give their own figures, such as 12 inches above a deck or balcony and 18 inches below a ventilated soffit.

What a Type B vent is for
Type B gas vent is made for listed Category I gas appliances with draft hoods. DuraVent's Type B instructions list gas fireplaces among the appliances that use it and say it must not vent Category II, III or IV appliances, oil-fired or wood-burning appliances. Florida's fuel gas code requires vents to be listed and labeled, with Type B vents listed to UL 441.

Reusing an existing vent
Replacing a fireplace does not automatically mean replacing the vent, but the old vent has to be approved for the new unit. The DirectVent Pro instructions tie approval to the appliance's rating plate and manual, and the Type B instructions allow B-vent on other gas appliances only where the appliance maker states it is acceptable.
