What a prefab fireplace repair involves in Whites Landing
Zero clearance still has clearances
A zero-clearance fireplace is designed so framing can come close to its outer casing. It is not permission to pack the space around it. One Superior manual lists minimum clearances to combustibles for the back and sides, the ceiling, the front and the chimney outer pipe, and warns that the air spaces it requires must never be packed with insulation or anything else.
The IHP guide adds that the clearances are printed on a label on each component. During a free inspection in Whites Landing, our experts read those labels where they can be reached and check that nothing has been pushed into the gaps during a remodel.
Patching a panel or replacing it
Refractory patching cement is meant for a panel that is still in one piece. The IHP guide is direct about it. The panel must be whole to patch. A panel that has broken through, lost a corner or shows its wire mesh has gone past that point, and the fix is a new panel from the manufacturer.

Doors fully open or fully closed
Prefab manuals are firm about glass doors. The IHP guide says they must be fully open or fully closed while a fire burns, because doors that are only partly open can pull flame out past the frame. It also says the grate and the wood should never touch the doors.
Hinges that sag, tracks that bind and latches that no longer hold make that rule hard to follow. Mantel rules for a factory-built fireplace come from its manual. One Superior line keeps combustible trim and mantels at least 12 inches from the opening on its 36-inch model and 18 inches on the 42- and 50-inch models, with further limits for anything projecting more than 1 1/2 inches. Another model can set different numbers.
