Choosing, fitting and fastening the cap
You choose the cap after seeing every option priced in writing, and the inspection costs nothing.
Factory-built chimneys keep their listed cap
A metal factory-built chimney is sold and tested as a system, and its termination cap is one of the parts. The Florida Building Code requires factory-built chimneys to be listed, labeled, installed and terminated to the maker's instructions. A universal cap fastened over the pipe is a different part.
We read the label or the manual, identify the system and replace the cap with the part made for it. If the original maker's part is no longer sold, we explain the listed options before ordering anything for your chimney.
Decorative shrouds on metal chimneys
A decorative shroud can make a chase top look finished, but it also changes how heat and exhaust behave around a metal chimney. Under the Florida Building Code, a shroud may sit at the top of a factory-built chimney only when it carries a listing and label for use with that exact chimney system and goes on per its maker's directions.
If you want a shroud, we check whether one is listed for your system before quoting it. If an existing shroud has no listing for the chimney beneath it, we explain the concern and the options in writing.
Mesh that keeps squirrels and raccoons out
Raccoons pull at loose mesh and squirrels chew at gaps along the lid, so the screen needs to be sound and fastened on every side. A cap with a bent corner or a missing panel invites the same animals back.
We fit caps with a screen that meets the code for the flue, fasten it to the frame and check the gaps where the cap meets the tile or crown. If animals have already damaged the old cap, we show you where they got in and what the new cap changes.
Metal chimneys that run through a chase
A factory-built chimney often rises through a framed box called a chase. The pipe ends in its own termination cap, and a metal chase cover closes the top of the box around it. The two parts are separate and wear out separately.
A rusted chase cover can leak even under a new cap, and a failed cap can let rain into a sound chase. We check both at the free inspection and price each one on its own line, so you know which part the work is replacing.
