Confirm compatibility before choosing the damper
A chimney top damper is not appropriate for every appliance or fuel arrangement. The proposed product must be compatible with the fireplace and its use. A chimney that carries exhaust from equipment with different requirements cannot be treated as a conventional wood fireplace merely because the opening looks familiar.
Mention an added appliance or a change from the original fuel before a damper is selected. A vented decorative appliance can require the damper to remain held open under its instructions. A closable top mount damper must not defeat that requirement. We establish the intended use before selecting a product.
Assess the top where the new assembly will sit
The mounting surface and flue opening need to suit the product. A damaged top tile or loose supporting material should not be hidden beneath a new damper. We assess the accessible condition and identify any repair that must occur before installation.
Chimney top damper installation also needs the correct relationship to nearby components. A damper assembly may provide a top closure or weather-protection function according to its design, but it is not a repair for a failed crown or roof flashing. Those separate defects remain part of the chimney assessment.
Plan an operating cable that works from the fireplace
The control arrangement must allow the damper to operate as intended without interfering with the fireplace. The cable, attachment and handle follow the product instructions. A cable that moves does not by itself establish that the top mechanism reaches its required position.

Understand what changes and what does not
A top sealing damper can be an alternative when a throat damper is no longer serviceable and the installation is compatible. It does not repair a deteriorated smoke chamber, damaged lining or an obstructed flue. Those findings need their own treatment before the fireplace returns to use.
