Tooled joints that shed water
The finish on a mortar joint affects how well it resists rain. Brick industry guidance favors concave, V-shaped and grapevine tooled joints for weather resistance, since tooling compresses the mortar surface and presses it tight against the brick.
Raked and struck joints can look sharp but leave small recesses or ledges where water sits. On a rebuild we tool the joints in the weather-resistant style you choose, and we keep that finish consistent from the first new course to the crown so the rebuilt section reads as one piece.
Joint width matters as well. We keep the new joints close to the width of the old ones so the rebuilt courses line up with the masonry that stays and the transition is hard to spot.
Changing the chimney's look during a rebuild
A rebuild is a chance to change how the top of the chimney looks, from brick color to a corbeled band or a different crown profile. Some changes are simple; others affect the flue, the height rule or the load on the masonry below.
We discuss the look you want before materials are ordered and check it against the code and the chimney's structure. Anything that changes the shape or the price appears on the estimate before work begins, so the finished chimney is the one you agreed to, inside and out.
Taller or heavier decorative tops can need extra support or a different crown, so we price those changes separately and explain what each one adds to the job.
