The details behind installing your Geigers Landing gas fireplace

Gas fireplace listings and the installation manual

The Florida fuel gas code treats a gas fireplace as a listed appliance. Vented gas fireplaces are listed to ANSI Z21.50 and vented gas fireplace heaters to ANSI Z21.88, and both are installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions (sections 604.1 and 605.1). Both are also equipped with a flame safeguard that shuts off the burner gas if ignition fails.

In practice, the manual for your model is the rulebook for the job. Our installers read it before the framing is planned and follow it through venting, clearances, gas connection and finish. The rating plate on your Geigers Landing fireplace tells you which listing it carries.

B-vent gas fireplace installation rules

A B-vent fireplace relies on natural draft, so its vent has firm rules. One maker's B-vent manual requires the draft hood to be in the same atmospheric pressure zone as the combustion air inlet, at least 8 feet of vertical rise measured between the unit's top and the termination's top, no more than two 90 degree elbows and a rise of at least 1/4 inch per foot on any horizontal run.

The fuel gas code adds that a Type B vent terminates at least 5 feet above the highest connected draft hood (503.6.6). Our pros check that your Geigers Landing home can give a B-vent unit the vertical run it needs before recommending one.

Setting the gas logs and media exactly as shown

The logs, rocks or glass media in a gas fireplace are part of how it burns. One manufacturer disclaims fireplaces where the gas logs or glass door are positioned improperly, and one B-vent manual says not to operate the unit if any log is broken.

Our installers place each piece as the manual's diagram shows and check the flame pattern once the burner is running. If you want to change the media later in your Geigers Landing home, use only the maker's approved kit for that model.

Replacing an old gas fireplace with a new one

A new gas fireplace does not automatically fit the old one's opening, vent or gas connection. Each unit's listing and manual set their own vent type, pipe size, framing and clearances, so the old vent may or may not suit the replacement.
