Every log has one right position
Log sets come with a placement diagram, and one maker says the set will not work as intended if the logs are not correctly positioned. Each log sits firmly in its place, the spacing between logs is kept, and the flames should not strike any part of the logs. Small changes matter. A log turned the wrong way or moved an inch toward the burner can put it in the flame and start a patch of soot.
We place the logs step by step from the set's own instructions and check the flame once it is burning. If the pattern is wrong, we adjust to the diagram until it matches. We also show you the layout so you can spot a log that has shifted.
Sunken floors and lips at the opening
The shape of the firebox floor matters. One maker's manual says a sunken fireplace floor has to be raised with noncombustible material so the controls can be reached and air can reach the burner, and it rules out fireplaces where the lip or recess at the front is deeper than its limit.
We check the floor level and the front lip during the inspection. If the floor needs raising, we explain the work and price it before the set is ordered. Raising a floor uses noncombustible material only, laid so the burner sits level and the controls stay easy to reach for lighting and service.
Preparing the firebox for a vent-free set
Vent-free sets bring their own preparation rules. One maker's manual requires any outside air duct or ash clean-out door in the floor or walls of the fireplace to be permanently sealed with heat-resistant sealant before installation, while the chimney damper itself is never sealed. Those openings would let drafts reach the burner from below, which is why the manual asks for them to be closed off.
Those openings are found during the inspection, and the sealing work is listed in the quote. With the firebox prepared, the burner goes in on a clean, sealed floor exactly as the manual describes.
Yearly service for a gas log set
Gas log sets need looking after. One maker requires its vent-free burner and oxygen depletion sensor pilot to be inspected before use and cleaned at least once a year by a qualified service technician, more often where lint and pet hair build up.
Our maintenance visits clean the burner and pilot, reset any logs that have shifted and check the controls, the damper clamp and the flame. Booking one before the cooler months means the set is ready when you want it. Each visit ends with a written record of what was cleaned and checked, and any repair it found is priced before we do it.
