Sizing the liner to the insert
The insert's flue collar and its manual set the liner diameter. A liner that is too small can starve the fire of draft, and an oversized one can let the exhaust cool and move slowly up the chimney.
We take the size from the manual for your model, never from the old flue. If the chimney cannot fit the size the insert needs, we explain that before you buy, when changing the model is still simple. The liner diameter goes into the written record, so a future replacement starts from the right size.
A tag that records the change
One insert manual asks for a metal tag on the back wall of the fireplace whenever the fireplace has been modified to accept the insert. The tag tells a future owner or inspector that the fireplace is no longer in its original condition.
When our work changes the fireplace, we fit the tag the manual describes and describe the change in the written record of the job. Removing the insert years later is then easier for whoever does it. The tag is small and sits out of view once the insert is in place.
Ember protection at the loading door
The loading door is where embers can drop when wood is added. The manual we follow calls for ember protection in front of the insert, in addition to the clearances around it.
Our installers confirm that the floor in front of the door meets the manual before the first fire. We also show you how to open the door slowly and load the fire so embers stay in the firebox. We point out where embers are most likely to land, so that area stays clear of rugs, baskets and kindling.
A yearly inspection of the insert system
Under NFPA 211, chimneys, fireplaces and vents get an inspection every year covering soundness, deposits and clearances. It also calls for a more thorough inspection when a connected appliance is added or replaced and before a flue is relined. A yearly visit also catches a loose top plate or a worn gasket before either one affects a fire.
We offer maintenance visits that cover the liner, the top plate and cap, the door seal and the baffle each year. Any work a visit finds is priced in writing first.
