Cracked or loose firebrick in the firebox
Firebrick is the lining that takes the direct heat of a wood fire. The Florida Building Code calls for a firebrick lining at least 2 inches thick, made to ASTM C27 or C1261, with joints between the bricks no wider than 1/4 inch (section R1001.5). With use, joints open, faces flake and single bricks crack through or work loose.
A fine crack in an otherwise sound brick is often watched rather than replaced. A brick that moves, a joint you can push a key into or a face that has shed its surface is replaced, and the bricks around it are checked at the same time. Hearth extension repair when the hearth falls short
Sparks and rolling embers land in front of the opening, which is why the hearth extension has minimum dimensions. Section R1001.10 asks for 16 inches of extension in front of the opening and 8 inches to either side, and for 20 and 12 inches once the opening reaches 6 square feet.

Electric fireplaces burn nothing, so their faults are electrical: a heater that stops, a flame effect that flickers out, a cord or plug that runs warm. Opening a live unit to look inside is unsafe. Ash cleanout and fireplace repair
Ash handling is part of using a wood fireplace safely. NFPA guidance says to let ashes cool, then put them in a metal container stored a safe distance from the house, and EPA wood-burning advice is to keep that covered metal container outdoors on a surface that will not burn.
Before we repair a firebox, the old ash is cleaned out and hauled away with the rest of the debris. If an ash dump door or cleanout cover is rusted or missing, we note it and quote the repair separately.
