Rebuilding a damaged firebox in Winter Springs
Refractory mortar in every joint
Under the Florida Building Code, firebrick is laid with medium-duty refractory mortar meeting ASTM C199. General-purpose masonry mix is not made for that heat and tends to crack and drop out after a few fires. We use refractory mortar for the joints inside the firebox and follow its maker's directions for mixing, filling and curing.

Refilling joints that have worn out
Mortar slowly erodes out of firebox joints and leaves grooves between the bricks, and grit collecting at the foot of the walls is often the first clue. We rake out loose mortar back to sound material, clean the joint and press refractory mortar in firmly, so each joint is full to the face with no hollow hiding behind it.

Curing new firebox mortar
New refractory mortar has to dry and then be brought up to heat in stages. One manufacturer's directions call for air drying at least 24 hours, a low fire held under 210 degrees F until the mortar has dried through, then a hotter fire of about 500 degrees F for one to two hours. Other products set their own steps.

The steel angle that carries the opening
Over the fireplace opening, the masonry is carried by a lintel, often a steel angle, and the Florida Building Code requires it to be noncombustible and to bear at least 4 inches onto the masonry at each end. Rust can swell the steel and crack the brick above it, and a sagging lintel shows as a dip or a crack over the opening. We check it whenever we work on the firebox.

Panels in a factory-built fireplace
Not every firebox is brick. Many factory-built fireplaces use molded refractory panels made for that model, and the Florida Building Code has them installed according to their listing rather than masonry rules. Loose firebrick is no substitute for a cracked panel, so we read the label on the unit before quoting anything.
