120-volt and 240-volt models

Household outlets supply 120 volts, and many plug-in fireplaces are built for them. Some built-in models also come in 240-volt versions that produce more heat, and those need a circuit made for them. The model number, never the size of the unit, tells you which version you have.

If you are still choosing, we point out which versions of your preferred model suit the power already at the wall. That helps you avoid ordering a 240-volt unit for a room where only a 120-volt supply is available, or the other way around.

Sealing an old fireplace for an insert

An electric insert set into a masonry fireplace sits below an open chimney. One plug-in firebox manual asks installers to seal drafts and vents with non-fibrous insulation, which keeps debris from the chimney off the unit and stops room air from escaping up the flue.

We close the old opening with materials that can be removed later and note what we used in the written record of the job. The chimney itself stays intact, so the change can be reversed if a future owner wants a wood fire back.

Handling the unit with care

Larger electric fireplaces are heavy and awkward to carry, and one manual says two people are needed for some installation steps. The same maker asks that the front glass stay in its box until installation and that the unit be stored dry and free of dust.

We bring enough hands for the size of the unit, protect your floors and walls along the route and keep the glass packed until the dusty work is finished. At the end of each day we clean up and haul the packaging and debris away.

Model, serial number and paperwork

Warranty claims and parts orders go faster when the exact model and serial number are known. One manual asks owners to register the unit, and every manual is easier to find when it sits with the home's records.

We write the model and serial number into the written record of the installation and leave the manual with you. If the unit ever needs a part, the details are ready for the maker or the next technician.
