Two layers of water barrier
The installation guide for adhered manufactured stone calls for two layers of water-resistive barrier behind the veneer, whatever the cladding beside it needs. Those layers are what keep water that passes through the stone away from the sheathing. When we remove loose veneer and find a single torn layer, or none at all, it is rebuilt properly before any stone is reset.

The cricket behind a wide chimney
A wide chimney on a sloped roof catches water running down from above. A cricket, a small peaked ridge built behind it, splits that water around the chimney. The veneer industry detail extends the cricket at least 2 inches beyond each side of the chase. Without it, water can pool against the back of the stone.

How deep old joints come out
Old mortar should come out to at least two to two and a half times the joint's width, according to Park Service repointing guidance, so the new mortar has room to grip. Stone with wide joints may need several inches taken out. Any loose or crumbling mortar beyond that depth comes out too.

Manufactured stone near the fire
Manufactured stone should not be used where it is exposed to direct flame, the veneer installation guide cautions, such as wrapping it back into the firebox, because heat can discolor the units and dry and crack the mortar. When a repair reaches the fireplace opening, we keep the stone where it belongs and point out any spot where it has been carried too far.

Old mortar smeared over the stone
Earlier repairs sometimes left mortar spread across the faces of the stones, wider than the joints and often in the wrong color. It traps dirt, hides the stone and can hold water against it.
