Relining the chimney from top to bottom

Clearances that cannot be confirmed
Where the space between the chimney and nearby framing cannot be seen or measured, the clearance is unknown. One liner maker calls for an approved insulation wrap in that situation.
When clearance cannot be confirmed from the accessible areas, you hear that from us, along with how the liner plan accounts for it. The finding is stated plainly rather than assumed, since concealed framing is where heat can do harm without being seen. If a finished wall or ceiling hides the chimney, we explain whether opening a small area would settle the question.
Tees and cleanout access
Where an appliance connects to a liner from the side, a tee joins the two, and a tee cap at the bottom gives access for cleaning. One maker's instructions describe removing soot through the tee branch.
We place the tee where both the connection and future cleaning can be reached. The cleaning method that suits the liner is explained at completion, so future sweeps do not damage the system. A tee that is hard to reach tends to be skipped at cleaning time, so access is part of the plan from the start.
One path for each appliance
The arrangement of a liner depends on the type, number and location of the appliances using the chimney, as one maker's instructions state. Two appliances are not joined into one liner unless their instructions and the code allow it.

What the relining estimate lists
A relining estimate names the liner system, its size and material, the insulation, the top plate and cap, the bottom connection and any preparation such as cleaning or tile removal.
