Choosing, fitting and fastening the cap

Cap, crown or chase cover
Three different parts get called the chimney cover. The cap is the metal fitting over a flue opening. The crown is the concrete or mortar top that covers the brick around the flues. The chase cover is the metal sheet across the top of a framed enclosure around a factory-built chimney.
They fail differently and they are fixed differently. Before calling, there is no need to work out which one is the problem. Tell us what you can see from the yard, and the inspection pins down the part so the estimate covers the right repair.
Factory-built chimneys keep their listed cap
A metal factory-built chimney is sold and tested as a system, and its termination cap is one of the parts. The Florida Building Code requires factory-built chimneys to be listed, labeled, installed and terminated to the maker's instructions. A universal cap fastened over the pipe is a different part.
We read the label or the manual, identify the system and replace the cap with the part made for it. If the original maker's part is no longer sold, we explain the listed options before ordering anything for your chimney.
After a cap comes down
When a cap falls in a storm, it can land in the yard, in a gutter or on the roof itself, and its edges are often sharp. Keep children and pets away from it and do not climb up to refit it. A ladder on a wet roof after a storm is a real risk.
Tell us where the cap landed and whether water has come into the fireplace since. We check the flue for debris that fell in, look at what the old cap was fastened to and fit a replacement that suits the chimney.
An unused fireplace still needs a cap
A fireplace nobody lights can still take in rain and animals. Water that runs down an open flue rusts the damper, stains the firebox and soaks the smoke chamber, however long it has been since the last fire.
Capping an idle chimney is one of the simplest ways to keep it from deteriorating. If you plan to use the fireplace again one day, we fit a cap that can be removed for sweeping and inspection when that day comes.
