Veneer, joint and stone repairs for Lake Mary chimneys
Where the chase cover meets the stone
Where a framed chimney is clad in stone, the metal chase cover should lap down over the top of the veneer. The industry detail shows at least 1 inch of overlap, so water running off the cover drips clear of the stone instead of into the top course. A short or rusted cover sends water straight behind the veneer.

Rebonding manufactured stone units
A manufactured stone that has let go is removed, and the scratch coat beneath it is checked for a sound, rough surface. If the scratch coat is loose or the lath has rusted, those are repaired first. The unit is then reset in fresh mortar following the veneer maker's instructions, and the joint around it is grouted to match.

Matching the color of the joints
The color and texture of a mortar joint come mostly from its sand, and Park Service guidance notes that matching the sand usually brings the rest into line. We look closely at the old joints, choose a sand and mix to suit them and make a small test before repointing a whole section. Fresh mortar still looks brighter for a while.

Manufactured stone near the fire
Manufactured stone should not be used where it is exposed to direct flame, the veneer installation guide cautions, such as wrapping it back into the firebox, because heat can discolor the units and dry and crack the mortar. Solid stone chimneys
Stone appears among the materials the Florida Building Code lists for masonry fireboxes and smoke chambers, and some chimneys are built of solid stone rather than faced with it. In a solid stone chimney each stone is part of the structure, so a loose one is reset carefully in its bed and nearby joints are checked for movement before anything is disturbed.
