Insulation, vapor barriers and the fireplace
One maker's manual says the fireplace must not be placed against a vapor barrier or exposed insulation, and an outside wall or a chase may contain both. That matters whenever the fireplace goes on an exterior wall.
We check what the wall contains before we set the unit and frame the space so the fireplace body stays clear of those materials. Where the manual calls for a lined enclosure, we build it that way. Any insulation we move is put back around the enclosure, so the wall keeps its insulation and the fireplace keeps its clearances.
Doors and accessories listed for the fireplace
Gasketed doors are allowed on a factory-built fireplace only when listed for it, the Florida Building Code says, and listed accessories must be installed to their listing. One maker also warns that accessories it has not tested may void its warranty or create a hazard.
We fit doors, screens and grates that the fireplace maker lists for your model. You get the look you want without stepping outside the listing that makes the fireplace safe to use. A door set from another maker may look right and still sit outside the listing, so we check part numbers against the maker's accessory list.
Chimney size follows the fireplace
One chimney maker's instructions say the chimney diameter comes from the appliance maker's instructions and must never be smaller than the appliance outlet. The fireplace sets the size, and the chimney follows.
We take the diameter from the fireplace manual and order the chimney to match. When an existing chimney is being considered for a new unit, the size is one of the first things we compare. A chimney that is too small for the fireplace will not draft as designed, however tall it is. The size we install goes into the written record of the job.
Yearly care for the new fireplace
Once a year, NFPA 211 says, chimneys, fireplaces and vents should be inspected for soundness, for freedom from deposits and for correct clearances. A new fireplace starts that cycle on its first anniversary.
Our maintenance visits let the team that installed your fireplace come back for that yearly look. Any work the visit finds is priced in writing first. The first yearly visit also confirms that the chimney parts, the chase top and the collar came through their first season as installed.
