Where the chase cover meets the stone

Where a framed chimney is clad in stone, the metal chase cover should lap down over the top of the veneer. The industry detail shows at least 1 inch of overlap, so water running off the cover drips clear of the stone instead of into the top course. A short or rusted cover sends water straight behind the veneer.

Soft sheathing behind the veneer

When water has been getting behind manufactured stone on a framed chase, the sheathing and framing underneath can soften long before the face shows it. Pressing on the veneer may give a little, or stones near a wet spot may sound hollow. We open the area, replace any soft wood and rebuild the barrier and lath before the stone goes back.

Replacing a cracked stone

A single cracked stone does not always mean trouble behind it, but it lets water in and can break apart further. We cut out the joints around it, remove the broken pieces and set a replacement of similar size and color. On natural stone we look for a close match in color and grain, and on manufactured stone we look for the same product line.

Refacing one side of the chimney

When loose units, soft backing and failed joints run across a whole side of the chimney, piecing it together costs more over time than refacing that side. Refacing removes the stone from the affected face, rebuilds the barrier, lath and scratch coat and sets the stone again, reusing sound units where they fit.
