A shutoff valve you can reach
The Florida fuel gas code gives each gas appliance a shutoff valve. The usual arrangement puts it in the same room, within 6 feet of the appliance and with access, and a valve inside a fireplace firebox has to follow the appliance maker's instructions. One maker's log set manual rules out a valve in the firebox for its burner.
We confirm where the shutoff valve is, or needs to be, before quoting. A valve you can reach easily matters every time the set is serviced and any time the gas has to be turned off quickly. We show you where it is and how it turns during the walk-through at the end of the job.
Replacing an old gas log set
Replacement starts with identifying what is installed. We look for the set's label, the burner, the valve and the ignition type, and check which parts are still sound and still supported by their maker.
Often the right answer is a complete new set, burner, valve and logs together, because the parts are designed and listed to work as one. When only the logs are worn and the maker still supplies them, a log replacement may be enough. The quote spells out which it is, what gets removed and what stays. If the old set used a different fuel from the one your home has now, the whole arrangement is replaced to match the supply.
Logs from one set do not suit another
Logs from different sets can look alike and still burn very differently. Their shape, weight and position are designed around one burner. Pieces borrowed from another set can sit in the flame, collect soot and change the combustion.
Use the components the maker specifies for your set, and buy replacement logs or ember material from that maker. If the original parts are no longer available, we explain the choices, which usually means a new matched set. We identify the set during the free inspection and tell you whether matching parts can still be ordered, before you spend money on pieces that might not fit.
What your written quote lists
Our gas log quote names the set, the burner, the ignition and control type, the removal of any old set, the cleaning or preparation the fireplace needs and the damper clamp on a vented installation. Supply work is named separately with who handles it. Each item carries its own price, so you can see what the set costs, what the fitting costs and what the preparation costs.
