How a top damper is installed in Slavia
Sizing the damper to the flue
Top dampers are made for specific flue sizes. The Lyemance range listed by Rockford Chimney Supply runs from 8 by 8 inch to 17 by 17 inch flues, with rectangular and round versions including a 12 inch round, and each frame is meant to sit on a flue of its own size.
The flue opening on your Slavia chimney is measured before ordering, including how far the tile stands above the crown. A damper chosen by guesswork can overhang the tile or leave gaps that the adhesive has to bridge, so the size goes on the estimate only after it has been measured.
Opening the damper with the spring
Top dampers are held open by a spring or lever under the lid. The Lyemance listing describes releasing the chain handle from the fireplace bracket to open the damper, with a lever assist under the lid, so opening it takes no pulling at all.

The safety device supplied with some dampers
Some top dampers come with a safety device built around a fusible link on the lid. The Lock-Top instructions state that this device must be installed for the warranty to be in effect, and they show how it is assembled under the lid before the damper goes on the chimney.
Our installers fit every part the maker supplies for the damper on your Slavia chimney, including any safety link, and follow the assembly order in the instructions. Leaving out a supplied part can void the maker's warranty, which is protection you are entitled to keep.
