How our technicians fit a gas log set
Every installation ends with a leak test, a lit flame checked against the manual and a written record.
Where a vent-free set is allowed
Vent-free sets carry room rules. The Florida fuel gas code keeps gas appliances out of bedrooms and bathrooms except in narrow cases, caps an unvented room heater at 40,000 Btu per hour and limits the total input of unvented appliances to 20 Btu per hour for each cubic foot of the room. One maker's vent-free manual also keeps units above 10,000 Btu per hour out of bedrooms and above 6,000 out of bathrooms.
We measure the room and compare it with the set's input before recommending a vent-free option. If the room is too small for the set you like, we tell you and suggest what would fit. The measurement goes into the written quote, so you can see how the chosen set compares with the limit for that room.
Natural gas or propane, matched to the rating plate
Every set is built for one gas, named on its rating plate. One maker states plainly that its burner is only for the gas on the plate, cannot be converted to another, and must not be installed if the supply is different. A natural gas burner run on propane, or the reverse, will not burn as it was designed to, and that is why the plate and the supply are checked together.
We confirm which fuel your home already has before recommending a set, and we order the version built for it. If your home has neither natural gas nor propane at the fireplace today, we explain what the supplier or a gas contractor would need to provide before a set can go in.
Supply pressure the burner needs
Every burner lists a minimum and a maximum inlet pressure, and the figures differ between natural gas and propane. One maker warns that low pressure keeps the oxygen depletion sensor pilot on its vent-free set from working properly, and that the piping has to be sized for the burner's full flow, with long runs needing a larger line.
We check the supply with a gauge where a test point allows and compare it with the manual. If the piping is too small or the pressure too low, that correction goes to a gas contractor, and we note it in the quote before any set is ordered. Pressure readings are noted in the written record, so the next technician starts from a known figure.
Water vapor from vent-free logs
Gas combustion produces water vapor, and with a vent-free set that vapor stays in the room. One maker's manual warns that long periods of use can create moisture problems in a home and says to open the damper or a window if condensation starts to form. It also describes the set as supplemental heat, never the main heat source.
