Carrying the chimney's weight
A factory-built chimney adds weight to the framing that supports it. The Florida Building Code requires those supporting members to be designed for the added load, and one maker asks for the pipe to be supported during construction.
Support points are marked on the plan and the framing under them checked. Supports, straps and braces from the listed system are part of the estimate, never an afterthought. On an upper floor or an older frame, that check can decide whether the fireplace goes on the wall you picked or the one beside it.
The roof opening for the chimney
The chimney has to pass through the roof somewhere, and one chimney maker advises against modifying roof beams to make room for it. The route is chosen to fall between structural members where possible.
We lay out the roof opening from inside the attic before cutting and coordinate the roofing work with your roofer or ours. The roof side of the job is listed in the estimate with who does it and in what order. The roof opening is covered at the end of each work day until the chimney and its roof parts are in place.
Where outside air may come from
The Florida Building Code calls for exterior combustion air for a wood-burning fireplace unless the room is mechanically ventilated to neutral or positive pressure. The intake must draw from outdoors or a ventilated crawl space or attic, never a garage or basement, behind a corrosion-resistant screen.
We locate the intake with those rules in mind and use the duct the fireplace lists. The intake location appears on the plan, so nobody later covers it with a patio or a planter. The duct run is kept as short and direct as the manual allows, which also makes the outside hood easy to find and keep clear.
Chimney size follows the fireplace
One chimney maker's instructions say the chimney diameter comes from the appliance maker's instructions and must never be smaller than the appliance outlet. The fireplace sets the size, and the chimney follows.
We take the diameter from the fireplace manual and order the chimney to match. When an existing chimney is being considered for a new unit, the size is one of the first things we compare. A chimney that is too small for the fireplace will not draft as designed, however tall it is. The size we install goes into the written record of the job.
