How the chimney is checked, top to bottom
The visit begins up top with the cap and crown, works down the outside faces to the roof line and the flashing, then goes inside to the firebox, the damper and as far up the flue as a light will reach. Caps sized to the flue
A cap stops rain from dropping straight into the flue and closes the top to birds and animals. The state's residential code says a rain cap on a masonry chimney must leave a net free area no smaller than four times the flue outlet's own, so smoke still leaves freely. The flue liner inside the chimney

The smoke chamber above the damper
Between the damper and the flue sits the smoke chamber, which funnels smoke upward into the flue. Code wants the inside of that chamber finished smooth with a coat of refractory mortar. Rough, stepped brick in that space slows the smoke and holds deposits, and cracks there let heat into the masonry behind. It is a part of the chimney homeowners rarely get to see.
