Why a yearly check is the standard advice
The National Fire Protection Association advises having chimneys and heating equipment cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. Its chimney standard, NFPA 211, frames it the same way: an inspection at least once a year, with cleaning done when the inspection finds it is needed.

Handling ashes between cleanings
Ashes can hold live embers long after a fire looks dead. The National Fire Protection Association's heating safety tips put it simply: wait for ashes to cool, carry them out in a metal container, and set that container well away from the house.
A metal can with a lid, set outside on bare ground away from walls, decks and the woodpile, is a simple habit that prevents a lot of trouble. A thin bed of ash can stay in the firebox, but clear the rest regularly so it does not crowd the grate or the air feeding the fire. Our sweeps can show you what to keep and what to remove. If you are unsure whether the ash is cold, leave it another day before moving it.
Houses with more than one flue
Many chimneys carry more than one flue: a second fireplace, a stove, or a furnace or water heater vent sharing the same masonry stack. Each flue is its own passage and needs to be identified before cleaning is priced.
We confirm which flue serves which appliance, clean the ones you have booked and point out any that look neglected or blocked. Fuel-burning appliances other than wood fireplaces have their own service requirements, so we tell you when a flue needs a different kind of visit. Your estimate lists each flue separately, so nothing is assumed and nothing is missed. If you are unsure which appliances use the chimney, we will trace each flue with you during the visit.
