Brushes sized to the flue

Flues come in different shapes and sizes. Clay tile is often square or rectangular, while metal liners and factory-built chimneys are round. A brush that is too small skims the middle and leaves deposits in the corners, and one that is too stiff or the wrong material can scratch a metal liner.

Brush head and rods are chosen to match the flue once it has been measured. For factory-built and stainless systems, the maker's instructions say which brush types are allowed, and we follow them. Getting the fit right is what separates a flue that looks swept from one that is actually clean along its whole length. Where a flue changes size or shape partway up, we switch brushes at that point so the whole run is cleaned from top to bottom.

A clogged cap screen

The mesh on a chimney cap keeps out animals and sparks, but it also collects soot and creosote. A screen clogged with deposits narrows the opening at the very top, and the fire may start to smoke into the room even with a clean flue below.

The cap screen gets cleaned on the same visit, and we make sure the cap itself is tight. The Florida Building Code, Residential, requires a masonry chimney's spark arrestor to offer at least four times the flue outlet's net free area and to be removable or reachable for cleaning, so a screen that cannot be cleaned is worth discussing with us. If the cap is loose, dented or rusted through, we tell you and quote a replacement separately.

A chimney smell that lingers

A smoky or musty smell from a cold fireplace often comes from deposits in the flue reacting with moisture. It tends to be strongest when the air is damp or the house is closed up and air is drawn down the chimney.

Cleaning removes the deposits behind much of that smell, and a well-sealing damper or a cap can keep damp air and rain out afterward. If the smell persists after a proper cleaning, we look for a leak or an airflow problem as a separate question. Gas odor is another matter entirely. Get everyone out, then phone the gas utility or 911 from the yard or the street. Keeping the damper closed while the fireplace is cold also helps, since it limits the air moving through the flue.
