Clearances to the mantel and the walls
Every insert lists the space it needs from the side walls, the mantel and the facing around it, measured from the insert body. One model asks for 24 inches to a combustible mantel, and other models give other figures.
We measure your mantel, trim and side walls against the manual for the insert you want. If they are too close, we explain whether a different model, a mantel change or a noncombustible facing solves it, with each option priced. The measurements are written into the estimate, so everyone works from the same numbers.
The surround panel
The surround panel covers the gap between the insert and the fireplace face. It is a finish piece, and it does not connect the insert to the chimney or fix anything behind it.
Whether the surround is sealed depends on the model and the air arrangement, and the manual decides. We fit it after the connection is complete and inspected, so nothing is hidden behind it that you have not seen. If the surround covers the old damper frame, we tell you what is behind it before it goes on.
Starting hot, never overfiring
The high air setting on an insert is for starting and preheating. One manual warns against overfiring, which can overheat the insert and damage its parts.
Our specialists show you the settings for a new fire, a steady burn and an overnight load, as your model's manual describes them. A fire run within the manual's range lasts longer and treats the insert better. Signs of an overfired insert, such as glowing parts, are covered at handover, along with what to do if you see them.
What never goes into the insert
EPA lists what should never be burned in a wood heater, including household trash, cardboard, plastics, foam, colored paper, and coated, painted or pressure-treated wood. Leftover lumber from a home project usually falls into that list.
We go over the list with you after installation. Clean, seasoned firewood is the only fuel the insert needs, and keeping to it protects the insert, the liner and the air inside and outside your home. Burning only clean wood also keeps the glass and the liner cleaner between maintenance visits.
