Vented and vent-free sets are different appliances
A vented set burns with the damper open and sends its exhaust up the chimney, like a wood fire. A vent-free set burns in the room and relies on an oxygen depletion sensor to shut it off if room air runs short. The fuel gas code places them under different standards and different rules. A vented set leaves much of its heat going up the chimney, while a vent-free set keeps its heat and its combustion products in the room.
Some burner systems are listed for both uses and installed to the section of the manual that matches the use chosen. We explain what each option would require of your fireplace and your room, and we put the requirements for the one you choose in the written quote.
Vent-free logs need someone in the room
One maker's manual calls its vent-free set an attended appliance. Adults must be present while it burns, and it must never be left burning when nobody is in the room or while anyone is sleeping. Young children should be supervised near it.
Those rules come with the set, and they matter when deciding between vented and vent-free. If the fireplace is somewhere you would like to leave burning for long stretches, we talk through whether a different appliance suits you better. The written quote notes which kind of set is proposed, so the rules that come with it are clear from the start.
Soot is a signal to stop
A clean-burning set should not leave soot. One maker's manual says that if soot appears on the appliance or around the fireplace, the set should be shut off and checked by a qualified technician, and that soot outside the firebox, on the walls, calls for turning it off at once.
Soot usually traces back to a log out of place, a draft across the burner, doors closed on a vent-free set or a dirty burner. We find the cause, correct it and clean up the deposits. Please leave the logs where they are until we arrive. Moving them without the diagram can make the soot worse.
What happens on installation day
We protect the floor and the hearth, set the burner in its position, connect it at the appliance shutoff valve where the supply is ready and leak test every connection we make. Then the ember bed and logs go in to the diagram. Old sets that are being replaced are disconnected, capped where the manual requires and carried out before the new burner goes in.
We light the set, check the flame and the controls, and adjust until the flame matches the manual. The room is cleaned, the packaging and debris leave with us, and you get the walk-through and a written record of the work.
