How long a powder treatment takes
The time a powder modifier needs varies. Its data sheet lists the type of wood, moisture content, burning habits, air flow, flue size and the amount of existing buildup as factors, and says some cases react within a week or two while harder buildup can take regular use and several cleanings during the heating season.
We set expectations accordingly. If a treatment needs weeks of use and repeat sweeps, the schedule and each visit are written into your estimate, and we check progress at every sweep. If progress stalls, we tell you and discuss switching to a different method.
Glaze in the smoke chamber
The smoke chamber, the sloped space between the damper and the flue, collects deposits too. The PCR system includes a separate sprayer for removing glazed creosote from smoke chambers, and treating that space is a separate step from treating the flue above it. Deposits there sit close to the fire and are easy to miss from the top of the chimney.
We include the smoke chamber in the free inspection and price its treatment on its own line. If the chamber's surface turns out to be rough or cracked beneath the deposit, smoke chamber repair is explained as a separate job.
Stove connectors, inserts and the thimble
When a wood stove or insert is connected to the chimney, the connector pipe and the thimble where it enters the flue collect deposits too. The PCR data sheet specifically mentions covering the thimble during treatment, and the appliance's manual governs how the connector comes apart. A connector that is heavily coated inside can restrict the stove's draft as well.
Our crew disconnects and reconnects the appliance as its instructions direct, cleans the connector along with the flue and checks the joints before we leave. If a part is worn or corroded, you hear about it before anything is replaced.
When a sweep recommends removal
A chimney sweep who finds glaze has done you a favor by saying so. Brushing cannot lift it, so the sweep stops and recommends a removal treatment instead of leaving you with a flue that only looks cleaned.
