Propane supply rules for a log set
Propane sets carry strict supply rules. One maker's manual requires the propane source to be regulated, located outside and hard-piped into the fireplace, and forbids a rubber hose or flexible connector run into the fireplace, a tank or cylinder inside the home and any connection to an unregulated tank.
The tank, the regulator and the line to the fireplace belong to the propane supplier or a gas contractor. We check what is there, name anything missing in the quote and fit the set once the supply meets the manual. Where a propane line already reaches the fireplace, we check its connection and regulator arrangement against the manual before quoting a set for it.
A damper that works before a vented set goes in
The damper on a fireplace with a vented set stays open for good, but it still has to be sound. A rusted plate that has dropped, a handle that no longer moves or a frame that has pulled away from the masonry can all interfere with the permanent opening the set needs.
We open and close the damper during the inspection, look at its frame and plate and tell you whether it can take a clamp as it is. If the damper needs repair or replacement first, that work is priced on its own line, and the set goes in once the damper is right. That way the clamp holds a damper that is worth holding open.
Glass doors and the fireplace screen
Fireplace doors change how a gas set breathes. One maker's vent-free manual requires glass doors to be fully open whenever the set is running and warns that closed doors can lead to soot, burner outages and worse. The same manual asks for a fireplace screen to be in place during operation, with openings for combustion air.

Water vapor from vent-free logs
Gas combustion produces water vapor, and with a vent-free set that vapor stays in the room. One maker's manual warns that long periods of use can create moisture problems in a home and says to open the damper or a window if condensation starts to form. It also describes the set as supplemental heat, never the main heat source.
