The screen in front of the glass
Gas fireplace glass can reach temperatures that burn skin, and it holds that heat long after the flame is out. Many newer models ship with a barrier screen in front of the glass to reduce that risk, and one maker's manual states that the barrier shall be installed and replaced with the maker's own part if it is damaged.
Barriers come off during service and go back before the fireplace is run again. If yours is missing, bent or loose, we can source the correct part for the model. Homes with toddlers may also want a safety gate, which that manual suggests for keeping small children away from hot surfaces.
Where the vent ends outside the house
A direct-vent fireplace takes its combustion air in from outdoors and sends exhaust out through that same termination, which is usually a cap on an exterior wall or on the roof. Leaves, nesting material, overgrown plants or a cap knocked out of place can upset that balance and change the flame.
During service we check the termination and the parts of the vent we can see and reach, look for damage and blockage and confirm the flame behaves normally with the vent clear. Faults in the vent run itself, such as separated joints or a route that needs changing, are handled as gas fireplace venting work and priced on their own.
Service for a vent-free fireplace
A vent-free fireplace depends on a clean burner and a clean oxygen depletion sensor pilot, because that pilot is what shuts the unit off if room air runs short. One maker requires the burner and that pilot to be cleaned at least once a year by a qualified service technician, and more often in homes with pets or heavy lint.
The same manual describes the appliance as supplemental heat that must not be left burning unattended or while anyone is asleep. Dedicated vent-free service, including the sensor and room-size checks, is its own service, and we tell you during the visit if your fireplace belongs there.
