Flue tile, joint and liner repair in Astor Farms
Tiles that have shifted out of line
Flue tiles are meant to stack flush, one directly on the next. When a tile has shifted, its edge sticks into the passage, catches deposits and leaves a gap on the opposite side. Settling, a chimney fire or earlier work can all move a tile out of line.

Replacing the top tile
The top flue tile is the one most exposed to weather. In the Brick Industry Association's chimney guidance, the flue liner rises no less than 2 inches above the cap, and the joint between the two is primed, backed and sealed. A cracked top tile or a failed seal there lets water straight into the chimney.

Reaching the flue from the roof
Much flue repair work happens from the top of the chimney, where tools and repair equipment are fed down the flue. That means safe roof access, protection for the roofing around the chimney and sometimes removing and refitting the cap.

Where a stove pipe enters the flue
When a stove or other appliance connects through the side of the chimney, the opening is lined with a thimble. Section R1003.16 of the Florida residential code has those inlets come in from the side through a thimble, which may be fireclay, metal or a rigid refractory material, so the connector cannot pull out of the opening or push through past the liner.
Cracks and gaps around a thimble are a frequent source of flue leaks. We check the inlet on every appliance chimney, and the look in Astor Farms is free.
