Planning a new chimney liner

Sizing the liner to the appliance
A flue smaller than the connector it serves is not allowed under the Florida Building Code. One liner maker also warns against a liner far larger than the appliance outlet, since oversizing slows the exhaust and lets it cool.
We size the liner from the appliance outlet and its instructions, then check that the chosen size fits the passage with any required insulation. The sizing basis is written in the estimate, so the choice can be checked against the appliance manual. When the passage is too small for the required size with its insulation, we explain the options instead of fitting a smaller liner than the appliance calls for.
Offsets and changes in direction
An offset shifts the flue to one side between the fireplace and the roof. The building code limits offsets in masonry chimneys, and at the bend the usable space inside the flue is smaller than at the top or bottom.
We check offsets during the route test and choose a liner that can make the turn without losing its shape. When an offset is too tight for the size the appliance needs, we explain the alternatives before any work is booked. The route test result is shared with you, so the reason for the chosen size is clear.
Reshaping a liner for a narrow flue
Flexible liners can be shaped into an oval to fit a narrow rectangular flue. Reshaping changes the cross-sectional area, as one liner maker points out, so an ovalized liner must still carry enough area for the appliance.
We recommend ovalizing only when the resulting area still meets the appliance's needs and the listing allows it. The size before and after shaping is explained, so the decision rests on the measurements rather than on what happens to fit. The listing and the appliance instructions both have to allow the reshaped liner, not only the space available.
What the relining estimate lists
A relining estimate names the liner system, its size and material, the insulation, the top plate and cap, the bottom connection and any preparation such as cleaning or tile removal.
