Curing time after a new crown
New concrete gains strength slowly and needs to keep its moisture while it does. A crown that dries too fast in hot sun can crack at the surface before it ever sees a storm, which is why curing is part of the job and not an afterthought left to the weather.
The mix we pour comes with its own curing directions, and following them may mean shading the new crown or keeping it damp for a set time. We tell you how long to wait before lighting the fireplace, and whether a coating or cap goes on the same day or on a return visit.
Crowns on chimneys with several flues
A chimney that carries two or three flues needs a crown shaped around all of them, with slope running away from each liner and enough width between them for a sound surface. Narrow strips of concrete between flues crack easily.
The form is planned around the actual flue layout, with a bond break at every liner and room for a cap that may cover some or all of the flues. The estimate shows the crown work and any cap work separately.
Crowns on stucco-finished chimneys
A stucco finish covers the brick or block of many chimneys, and the crown sits on top of that system. Where the crown meets the stucco, a crack or open joint lets water behind the finish, where it can travel a long way before it shows.
We check the crown edge and the top of the stucco together. If water has already got behind the finish, the crown repair includes sealing that joint, and any stucco damage is priced on its own line.
Protecting the roof during crown work
Breaking out an old crown sends dust and concrete toward the roof and gutters. We cover the roofing around the chimney, protect the flue openings from debris and lower the old material instead of dropping it. Any cap removed for the work is stored where it cannot be damaged or blow away.
At the end of the day the roof is swept, the gutters near the chimney are cleared and the flues are checked for anything that fell in. If we notice roofing damage near the chimney, we mention it before we leave.
