Glass doors and the fireplace screen
Fireplace doors change how a gas set breathes. One maker's vent-free manual requires glass doors to be fully open whenever the set is running and warns that closed doors can lead to soot, burner outages and worse. The same manual asks for a fireplace screen to be in place during operation, with openings for combustion air.
We check your doors and screen against the chosen set's manual. If the doors must stay open, we make sure they can be secured that way, and we explain what the screen is there to do. Vented sets have their own door rules in their manuals, and we read those too before recommending that doors stay on the fireplace.
Hot logs and hot glass
Gas logs and the surfaces around them stay hot for some time after the flame goes out. One maker's manual asks that children and adults be warned about hot surfaces and that anyone repositioning a log use heat-resistant gloves or wait until it has cooled. The glass doors, the screen and the fireplace face around the opening can also stay warm well after the fire is off.

Soot is a signal to stop
A clean-burning set should not leave soot. One maker's manual says that if soot appears on the appliance or around the fireplace, the set should be shut off and checked by a qualified technician, and that soot outside the firebox, on the walls, calls for turning it off at once.
Soot usually traces back to a log out of place, a draft across the burner, doors closed on a vent-free set or a dirty burner. We find the cause, correct it and clean up the deposits. Please leave the logs where they are until we arrive. Moving them without the diagram can make the soot worse.
