A slow or uneven light-up
When the burner lights, the flame should spread across every port quickly. One maker describes a total light-up of 5 to 10 seconds as satisfactory and asks for service when ignition takes longer. A burner that lights in patches, rolls flame out of the front or lights with a soft thump is telling you something.
Ports clogged with lint, a dirty pilot, low gas pressure and media sitting where it should not are all possible reasons. We clean the ports and the pilot assembly, reset the logs to the diagram and measure the pressure if the light-up is still slow afterward.
Exhaust odor near the fireplace

A fireplace that smells of exhaust while it runs, or leaves people with headaches in the room, needs checking before it is used again. Service for a vent-free fireplace
A vent-free fireplace depends on a clean burner and a clean oxygen depletion sensor pilot, because that pilot is what shuts the unit off if room air runs short. One maker requires the burner and that pilot to be cleaned at least once a year by a qualified service technician, and more often in homes with pets or heavy lint.
The same manual describes the appliance as supplemental heat that must not be left burning unattended or while anyone is asleep. Dedicated vent-free service, including the sensor and room-size checks, is its own service, and we tell you during the visit if your fireplace belongs there.
When a repair stops making sense
Many gas fireplace faults come down to a cleaning, an adjustment or one part. Sometimes the picture is different. A discontinued valve with no approved replacement, a firebox that has burned through or several failing parts at once can make repair a poor use of money. Age alone is no reason to replace a fireplace that can still be repaired with listed parts.
