Electronic ignition that lights on demand

Many newer fireplaces light the pilot only when you ask for heat. A control module sends a spark to the pilot, proves the pilot flame with a sensor and then opens the main burner. When the fireplace is switched off, both flames go out. Some models also offer a continuous pilot mode, and one maker's control turns that pilot off by itself after about seven days without use.

When this kind of system fails, the fault can sit in the spark, the flame sensor, the module, the wiring or the power supply. We work through the sequence the manual gives for that model, so the part replaced is the part that failed.

Main burner out while the pilot stays lit

A pilot that burns steadily while the main flame will not come on, or comes on and then quits, is a different fault. The current from the thermopile may be too weak, the wall switch or its wiring may be failing, or a long or thin switch wire may add too much resistance for a millivolt system to carry.

A blocked vent can also shut the main burner down, and so can a remote receiver with tired batteries. We test the switch circuit, measure the thermopile where the model's manual gives a test value and check the vent path before recommending a part.

Where the vent ends outside the house

A direct-vent fireplace takes its combustion air in from outdoors and sends exhaust out through that same termination, which is usually a cap on an exterior wall or on the roof. Leaves, nesting material, overgrown plants or a cap knocked out of place can upset that balance and change the flame.

During service we check the termination and the parts of the vent we can see and reach, look for damage and blockage and confirm the flame behaves normally with the vent clear. Faults in the vent run itself, such as separated joints or a route that needs changing, are handled as gas fireplace venting work and priced on their own.

If you smell gas

A gas smell comes before any repair. Leave the house, do not switch lights or appliances on or off on the way out, and do not use a phone inside. Once outside, call the gas utility or 911 and do what they tell you.
