When a dedicated circuit is needed
The built-in manual we follow recommends a dedicated, properly fused circuit for the heater. It treats that circuit as required if the breaker trips regularly while the heater runs, because other appliances on a shared circuit can push the total past its rating.
During the inspection we ask what else runs on the circuit you plan to use, such as lamps, a television or a space heater. If sharing looks likely to trip the breaker, we recommend a dedicated circuit and list it as electrician's work in the written estimate, with its place in the schedule.
Finish materials around the unit
Tile, stone or trim around an electric fireplace should frame it without blocking its airflow. One maker limits any decorative finish that overhangs the unit to half an inch, so heated air can leave the outlet freely. The same rule applies whether the surround is stone, tile or wood trim.
We share the manual's finish limits with you and with any tile setter or carpenter before they start. A handsome surround that covers the heater outlet would have to come off again, and nobody wants to pay for the same wall twice.
A dry opening for the insert
The same firebox manual warns against installing the unit in an opening prone to dampness. Water that reaches an old firebox can come down the flue through a missing cap or a damaged chimney top, and it lands right where the insert's electrics would sit.
Before an insert is recommended, the firebox floor and walls get checked for water marks. If the chimney is letting water in, we explain the repair and price it separately, so the source is fixed before the new unit goes in.
The overheat cutoff
The built-in manual we follow describes an overheat limit that shuts the heater down when something is wrong, such as blocked airflow. On that model the reset is made at the main electrical panel, and repeated resets mean the unit needs service.
