Supply pressure the burner needs
Every burner lists a minimum and a maximum inlet pressure, and the figures differ between natural gas and propane. One maker warns that low pressure keeps the oxygen depletion sensor pilot on its vent-free set from working properly, and that the piping has to be sized for the burner's full flow, with long runs needing a larger line.
We check the supply with a gauge where a test point allows and compare it with the manual. If the piping is too small or the pressure too low, that correction goes to a gas contractor, and we note it in the quote before any set is ordered. Pressure readings are noted in the written record, so the next technician starts from a known figure.
Sunken floors and lips at the opening
The shape of the firebox floor matters. One maker's manual says a sunken fireplace floor has to be raised with noncombustible material so the controls can be reached and air can reach the burner, and it rules out fireplaces where the lip or recess at the front is deeper than its limit.
We check the floor level and the front lip during the inspection. If the floor needs raising, we explain the work and price it before the set is ordered. Raising a floor uses noncombustible material only, laid so the burner sits level and the controls stay easy to reach for lighting and service.
The handover and the manual
The job ends with you able to run the set confidently. We light it with you, show the lighting and shutdown steps, the remote or switch, the damper clamp on a vented set and the log layout, and explain what to watch for. We also point out the shutoff valve, so everyone in the house knows how to turn the gas off at the fireplace.
The manual stays with the set, as one maker's installer instructions require, and you get a written record of what we installed. Keep both together for the next service visit.
Buying the set yourself
Some homeowners find a set they like and want it installed. That can work, provided the set is checked against the fireplace, the fuel and the room before you commit. A set that fails one requirement cannot be installed however good it looks. Online listings show the look of a set, but the manual is where the fireplace size, clearance and fuel requirements live.
