How refractory panels are made
The brick look inside a factory-built firebox is often a set of molded panels rather than bricks laid one at a time. The IHP guide describes its refractory as a high-quality cement mixture reinforced with wire mesh, lining the back, sides and bottom of a heavy-gauge steel firebox. Every fire heats and cools those panels, and that movement is where cracks begin.
Knowing what the panel is made of changes the repair. Our specialists in Slavia do not treat a cracked panel like a masonry wall. They judge it against the manufacturer's crack limit and replace it as a unit when patching is no longer allowed.
Spark screens and screen rods
The mesh screen gets handled at every fire and rarely gets a second thought. The IHP guide says it should always be closed while a fire burns and warns that the handles get hot. On one Superior model the screens hang from rods fixed at the smoke shelf, and both carry part numbers for replacement.
Torn mesh, bent rods and rings that no longer slide are replaced in Slavia with the screen parts for your model. Air moving through the fireplace when it is off
A fireplace that is not in use should not move much air. The IHP guide gives three checks for drafts from a cold unit. Close the damper if air comes from the opening, close the outside air damper if it comes from the sides of the firebox, and caulk the fireplace frame to its enclosure if air comes in between the fireplace and the wall.

Grates, screens, standoffs, spacers and grate retainers, by contrast, carry part numbers for replacement.
