Wall switch, remote and receiver
A fireplace that ignores the remote may have a remote problem, a receiver problem or an appliance problem. The handheld unit and the receiver each run on batteries, and the receiver often sits near the valve, where heat and lint reach it. A wall switch adds its own wiring between the room and the control.

Direct-vent, B-vent or vent-free
Gas fireplaces fall into three broad groups. A direct-vent unit has a sealed glass front and draws outside air through a two-part vent. A B-vent unit uses air from the room and sends exhaust up a vent pipe. A vent-free unit has no vent at all and burns in the room, with a sensor pilot that shuts it off if the oxygen in the room falls.
Each group has its own checks and its own risks, so identifying the type is part of the first look. The Florida fuel gas code lists vented gas fireplaces, vented fireplace heaters and unvented room heaters under separate standards, and the service steps in each manual follow the same split.
Safety controls are never bypassed
Gas fireplaces carry devices that shut off the gas when something is wrong, such as a pilot that goes out or a sensor that reads an unsafe condition. Jumping a sensor, wedging a knob or wiring around a switch to get the fire going can leave gas flowing with nothing to stop it.
Manufacturers state that changes to the appliance or its controls are dangerous and prohibited. When a safety device trips, we find out why it tripped and fix that cause. A device that keeps shutting the unit down is usually doing its job, and the answer is to find what it is reacting to.
If you smell gas
A gas smell comes before any repair. Leave the house, do not switch lights or appliances on or off on the way out, and do not use a phone inside. Once outside, call the gas utility or 911 and do what they tell you.
