Flue size for an open fireplace
An open masonry fireplace needs a flue area in proportion to its opening. The Florida Building Code sets that proportion at one-twelfth of the opening for a round flue, one-tenth for a square flue and one-eighth for a rectangular flue whose sides differ by a ratio of 2 to 1 or more.
A liner too small for the opening can leave smoke spilling from the front of the fireplace even when everything else is sound. We measure the opening and the flue before recommending a liner for an open fireplace. When the existing passage cannot hold a liner of the required area, we explain what that means for an open fireplace and what the alternatives are.
Connecting the liner to the appliance
The bottom connection joins the liner to the appliance outlet through an adapter, a connector or an insert collar. The appliance's instructions and the code in force set the clearances and the parts that may be used there.
We plan this connection before the liner is ordered, since it can decide the liner size and the parts needed. Moving an appliance for access is planned with protection for the floor and the hearth. The connection is the part of the system you see every day, so it is finished neatly and left accessible for inspection.

A wood-burning insert connects to the chimney through a liner, and the insert's installation instructions set the size and how the liner joins the insert collar.
The insert's instructions are read before the liner is planned, and we confirm that the chimney can carry the liner size required. A relining estimate names the liner system, its size and material, the insulation, the top plate and cap, the bottom connection and any preparation such as cleaning or tile removal.
