A tag that records the change

One insert manual asks for a metal tag on the back wall of the fireplace whenever the fireplace has been modified to accept the insert. The tag tells a future owner or inspector that the fireplace is no longer in its original condition.

Chimney height and draft

When the chimney falls outside its range, we explain the options before any insert is ordered. Each insert lists the smallest fireplace it can go into, usually as a width at the front and back, a height and a depth. A fireplace that is a little too shallow or too narrow at the back can rule a model out even when the front looks generous.
