How we install fireplace inserts in Lake Monroe

Reading the label on an existing insert

Every listed insert carries a label with the maker, the model and the standard it was tested to. On an older insert the label may be faded, painted over or hidden behind the surround.

We find and read the label before recommending any work on an existing unit. When no label can be found, we explain what that means for service and replacement, and we never guess at clearances for a model we cannot identify. An insert we cannot identify is one we may recommend replacing rather than servicing, and we explain why in writing.

A direct connection and its limits

Some manuals also allow a direct or positive connection, with a short connector from the insert into the existing flue and a block-off plate sealing the throat. Local codes may call for a clean-out door with that arrangement, and one maker does not allow a face-seal connection at all.

We explain which connections your model permits and what each means for cleaning and draft. Where a full liner is the better answer, we say so, and the difference in scope appears side by side in the estimate.

Ember protection at the loading door

The loading door is where embers can drop when wood is added. The manual we follow calls for ember protection in front of the insert, in addition to the clearances around it.

Our installers confirm that the floor in front of the door meets the manual before the first fire. We also show you how to open the door slowly and load the fire so embers stay in the firebox. We point out where embers are most likely to land, so that area stays clear of rugs, baskets and kindling.

How the blower switches on

Many insert blowers are controlled by a thermostat that starts the fan once the insert is warm and stops it as the fire dies down. The manual we follow adds a manual override for owners who prefer to run the fan themselves.

At handover we show you both settings and explain the fan noise you should expect. A blower that runs as designed moves more of the insert's warmth into the room. The blower's controls are listed in the written record of the installation along with the model.
