The damper stays open for a vented set
A vented set needs a permanent opening in the damper so exhaust always has a way out. One maker's manual says the damper must be fully open when the set burns and supplies a clamp, permanently installed, that stops the damper blade from closing fully.
If the clamp does not fit that damper, the same manual offers other ways to hold the minimum opening in its table: a permanent stop, taking out the damper blade, or cutting the damper down. We fit the clamp or the alternative as part of the installation and show you where it is, so nobody closes the damper by mistake. A vented set burning against a closed damper would push its exhaust into the room, which is exactly what the clamp is there to prevent.
How the set lights
Under the fuel gas code, most decorative gas appliances for fireplaces must light by direct ignition, an igniter or a pilot flame, and must have a flame safeguard that cuts the gas if the flame goes out. A separate listing covers sets that are lit by hand with a match on natural gas.
The ignition type decides how you start the set, with a remote, a wall switch or a knob in the fireplace. We explain each option for the set you like and include the control type in the written quote. A remote-ready set usually has a receiver that runs on batteries, and we show you where it sits and how to change them.
The handover and the manual
The job ends with you able to run the set confidently. We light it with you, show the lighting and shutdown steps, the remote or switch, the damper clamp on a vented set and the log layout, and explain what to watch for. We also point out the shutoff valve, so everyone in the house knows how to turn the gas off at the fireplace.
The manual stays with the set, as one maker's installer instructions require, and you get a written record of what we installed. Keep both together for the next service visit.
Yearly service for a gas log set
Gas log sets need looking after. One maker requires its vent-free burner and oxygen depletion sensor pilot to be inspected before use and cleaned at least once a year by a qualified service technician, more often where lint and pet hair build up.
Our maintenance visits clean the burner and pilot, reset any logs that have shifted and check the controls, the damper clamp and the flame. Booking one before the cooler months means the set is ready when you want it. Each visit ends with a written record of what was cleaned and checked, and any repair it found is priced before we do it.
