Sizing the burner to the firebox
Every set lists the minimum fireplace size it needs, usually the front width, rear width, depth and height of the firebox. A set that fits through the opening can still be too large for the space behind it. One maker's manual also asks for the burner to be centered, with no part sticking out past the face of the fireplace and the unit never pushed hard against the back wall.
We measure the firebox at every point the set's manual names and compare the numbers before you order. That keeps the flame where it belongs and the controls where you can reach them. The measurements are written into the quote beside the set's own minimums, so you can see the margin for yourself.
The gas line, and whose job it is
Our work is the appliance, meaning the burner, the logs, the controls and their fitting in the fireplace. New piping, a new stub into the firebox, meter work and propane tanks are outside that and go to a gas contractor, the utility or the propane supplier. Keeping the two apart means the quote you approve describes exactly what our technicians will do in your home.
The Florida fuel gas code calls for piping to be checked for leakage when gas is turned on, and for appliance connections to be checked before an appliance is put into operation. We coordinate with whoever handles the supply, and every connection we make is leak tested before the first fire.
The first hours of burning
New burners and logs are treated with oils and paints during manufacture, and those burn off the first few times the set runs. One maker describes the smoke and smell as normal and calls for a break-in period of four to six hours with as much ventilation as possible, windows or doors open.
We light the set with you at the end of installation, explain what the break-in smell is and how long to expect it, and tell you what would be out of the ordinary. That way the first evening holds no surprises. If the smell continues well past the break-in period, or it changes, turn the set off and ask for it to be checked.
Buying the set yourself
Some homeowners find a set they like and want it installed. That can work, provided the set is checked against the fireplace, the fuel and the room before you commit. A set that fails one requirement cannot be installed however good it looks. Online listings show the look of a set, but the manual is where the fireplace size, clearance and fuel requirements live.
