Rebuilding a damaged firebox in Heathrow

Under the Florida Building Code, firebrick is laid with medium-duty refractory mortar meeting ASTM C199. General-purpose masonry mix is not made for that heat and tends to crack and drop out after a few fires. Relining one wall at a time
Damage is seldom spread evenly. A back wall can be worn out while the side walls and floor are sound. Relining one wall removes only the failed firebrick, ties the new work into the bricks that stay and leaves you with a firebox that is solid corner to corner, without paying for work it did not need.

Never cool a firebox with water
Water thrown on hot firebrick cools the face suddenly while the inside of the brick is still hot, and that shock can crack it. Let fires burn down and let the brick cool on its own. Angled and shallow firebox shapes
Plenty of masonry fireboxes have side walls that angle outward and a back wall that leans forward toward the top, and some older designs are tall and shallow.
