Brushes sized to the flue
Flues come in different shapes and sizes. Clay tile is often square or rectangular, while metal liners and factory-built chimneys are round. A brush that is too small skims the middle and leaves deposits in the corners, and one that is too stiff or the wrong material can scratch a metal liner.
Brush head and rods are chosen to match the flue once it has been measured. For factory-built and stainless systems, the maker's instructions say which brush types are allowed, and we follow them. Getting the fit right is what separates a flue that looks swept from one that is actually clean along its whole length. Where a flue changes size or shape partway up, we switch brushes at that point so the whole run is cleaned from top to bottom.
Metal and factory-built chimneys
Many homes have a factory-built fireplace with a round metal chimney instead of a masonry one. These systems are tested and listed as a unit, and the maker's installation manual sets out how they are cleaned and which brushes are allowed.
We follow those instructions, since scratched or dented flue sections can shorten the life of the system. While cleaning we check for rust, separated joints and damaged sections, and we note anything that should keep the fireplace out of use. Parts are replaced only with components made for that system, and any repair is priced separately before work begins. If you have the manual or can find the label inside the fireplace, have it handy when we arrive.
The walk-through when we finish
Before we pack up, we show you the cleaned firebox, explain what came out of the flue and point out anything that needs attention. The drop cloths come up carefully and folded inward so no soot is shaken onto the floor.
Your service notes list the flue cleaned, the condition of the damper, smoke shelf and cap, and any repair we recommend, each with its own price. Keep them with your house records.
